Scales origins date back to 1897. Today it is a diversified agribusiness portfolio with divisions that are geographically spread, supplying multiple markets and customers. Scales has exposure to unique and separate components of the New Zealand primary sector.
Led by Chairman Mike Petersen and Managing Director Andy Borland, Scales Corporation currently operates three divisions, Horticulture, Logistics, and Global Proteins, in adjacent primary sectors.
We are dedicated to growing and sourcing agribusiness opportunities. We believe we have the expertise, experience and financial capability to help transform New Zealand into a global agribusiness super-power amongst the world’s temperate climates.
For more than 100 years, we’ve worked with New Zealand producers to get our goods out into the world. This is our place in the economy. We’re passionate about it. We’re growing it. We’re deepening and broadening our involvement in it. And we know that, alongside others, by taking the biggest view we can and investing smartly, we can bring home returns that our shareholders can be proud of.
In late 2017 we refreshed our growth strategy to focus on pure agribusinesses that play well to our strengths, being: fully vertically-integrated; export led; add value from our China relationships.
The successful implementation of our refresh strategy will ultimately mean a meaningful rebalance of our portfolio of businesses. We have commenced this rebalance with the divestment of storage businesses Polarcold and Liqueo. Our initial reinvestment focus has been in our Global Proteins division, where we have acquired a controlling interest in Shelby Foods, a US based petfood ingredient processor and marketer. We have also entered into a partnership with Alliance, one of New Zealand’s leading farming co-operatives. We expect this joint venture will provide benefits to the entire New Zealand petfood supply industry.
